Parkesine is a floating sculpture  made from  recycled bottle tops and lids. It pays homage to Alexander Parkes who  invented and  manufactured the world’s first plastic  in the Wick in 1866.  The idea was formed  whilst noticing amateur football players throwing away their water bottles and sports drinks on nearby Hackney Marsh.
Parkesine has been commissioned by Design for London in collaboration with MUF art and architects.

Esther R. Sabetpour
Friday 29 – Sunday 31 July
The Yard Dace Road

The project emerges out of a traumatic yet profound accident suffered by Esther last year. It left 32% of her body, scattered with 3rd to 4th degree burns, 5 fractures and a brain injury resulting in amnesia.  Esther chose to document her experience of recovery through creating a set of compelling self-portraits.

Though the artist has been representing herself in front of the lens since 1997, her recent work unveils another layer, helping us to get closer, urging us to question our understanding of beauty through her response to her body. This set of new photographs courageously demonstrates beauty and vulnerability; a visual dialogue between destruction and construction. This recent photographic journey began from within the solitary isolation of a hospital burns unit. The artists vision of powerful landscapes and backdrops for her portraits took her most recently to Iran. Here she produced some of her most recent work, from within the harsh desert landscape of the Middle East.

The carefully selected locations are both powerful and dramatic settings.  They resonate a sense of connection to the disturbing event which the artist cannot recall.  “ Each location is a reflection of an emotional landscape or abstract mind space”  The placement of this work within this setting, takes the viewer deeper into the surreal, dreamlike dimension of Esther’s work.

Friday 29 July
Folly for a Flyover

"The day is coming when a single carrot, freshly observed, will set off a revolution!"
Paul Cézanne

Bloodsucking evil created by radiation, soilent creatures sent here to terraform our planet, controlling all elements of the biological down to the cellular level. Come the vegetable rebellion, they will have their day. They came here and built their organic machines from giant vegetables. But what is the purpose of these machines? Although predominantly benign, these entities consisting of mainly carbohydrates finally get their retribution. The ultimate form of revolution arises from the earth, as subservient salad turns to violent vengeance. This program of short artist films, television excerpts and trailers presents a cornucopia of catastrophic calamities and inexplicable encounters between man and vegetable, curated by xero, kline & coma and featuring the work of Gelbart (with Felix Kubin), Pil and Galia Kollectiv, Charlie Tweed and others.
